What is SICK in a good way!

Okay, here is what is sick...

A writer who moves people.  A writer who makes you cheer for the good guy and loathe the bad guy.  I'm enthralled by this Invisible Ink Blog.  I mean it is overwhelming to consider the amount of thought that goes into making a good story.  Just watch the trailer of The King's Speech.

In a matter of minutes I found myself almost in tears.  A common ordinary problem played out on a stage of epic proportion.  It reminded me of Enemy At The Gates.

Courage in the midst of great fear.

How do you build great stories.  How do you tell a great story.  Most great stories are true stories of courage despite the odds.  How can I incorporate this into my graphic novel?

Kayden's Character

Wow!  I just found the Invisible Ink blog by Brian McDonald.  I am reminded of the invaluable words contained in The Hero's Journey.  This has influenced my thinking tremendously and increased my faith in Christ.  The Hero is ultimately Christ.  Every story told adheres on some level to the story of Christ.  It makes me feel honored, humbled, inspired and overwhelmed at the same time.  How can every story ever told be a link to Christ?  It goes without saying that in him we live and move and have our being.  He is the Hero with the balance of creation's fate in submission to his decision.  Will Christ endure the cross and save mankind or will he falter in his mission and cost every man his chance at eternal life.  Amazing!  Gesthemane is the final return to God for strength, the intervention of angels not to rescue him from death but to strengthen him with courage to face death.  Not the amazing support of friends and family but the total abandonment of everything good and the reign of absolute darkness.  Then the cross the unjust trial, the suffering, his death and the hopeless emptiness of an unfinished work.  On the third day the glorious resurrection, the rebirth of hope and the absolute resolution of the matter.  Death will not win, can not win and has ultimately been overcome..."It is finished."

Ultimately when we cheer for our heroes, wether it be Harry Potter or White Fang we cheer for the Spirit of Christ.  We are cheering for good, victorious over evil.  For an unselfish act of courage over cowardly self absorption.  The heroes we connect with the most are the heroes who count the cost between self-preservation and ultimate sacrifice.  Listen to Paul when he says in Philippians 2: 3-11  (Bible Gateway- NIV)

3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, 4 not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.
5 In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus:
6 Who, being in very nature[a] God,
   did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage;
7 rather, he made himself nothing
by taking the very nature[b] of a servant,
   being made in human likeness.
8 And being found in appearance as a man,
   he humbled himself
   by becoming obedient to death—
      even death on a cross!
9 Therefore God exalted him to the highest place
and gave him the name that is above every name,
10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,
in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
11 and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord,
to the glory of God the Father.

Let's get started...

Okay, so I've been working diligently in my spare time on The Legend of Harapan.  You can't tell it yet because I haven't posted anything.  This is a hard thing to do.  As I consider concepts for my graphic novel, I come up with okay ideas, good ideas and great ideas...at least in my opinion.  However, I want the final product to be a bit of a surprise to folks so I don't know how much to share.  Not to mention maybe my ideas would be taken and used if I put all the meaty stuff out there.  Then I think who am I kidding anyway.  Nobody is going to read this for a long long time if ever.

So let's get started.  I've developed my main character Wyn.  He's a great makocycle racer.  Possibly the best his age in all of Harapan.  Of course nobody knows if he is or isn't until the Tre Prix 1000.  He, along with his close friends Maya and Renny are team number 4 and they have been invited to compete in the Youth Race at Tre Prix.  None of them are old enough to race professionally.  They are only 14 years old, but because racing is such a huge part of the culture in Harapan kids start racing when they are as young as five.  Word gets around and the King selects 34 teams of youth riders to do an 100 lap amateur version of the Tre Prix 1000.

Maya is the air racer, Wyn the land racer and Renny is the water racer.  Ya see, racing in Harapan is different from what your used to.  There are three tracks in a professional Harapanian race.  The interior track is water and one third of a mile long.  The middle track is land and is two thirds of a mile long.  The outer track is in the air, marked by extremely tall and flexible pylons, and as you guessed it, a full mile long.  Now pro water-crafts typically travel at about 100 mph, land vehicles about 200 mph and air nearly 300 mph.  What that means for spectators is action overload.  102 racers on air, land and sea traveling around a track every 12-13 seconds for hours depending on the length of the race.  At the Tre Prix it's 1000 laps so at least 4 hours of racing, but usually more with wrecks and pit stops.

Readers will pick the story up just a few days before the Tre Prix and Wyn along with his friends are extremely excited about their chances at the pre-race.  This year 12 lucky racers from the pre-race group will be chosen to go to the famous MakoTech Space lab to test out some of the latest and greatest racing confidential technology.  They will get a hands on look at the research and development of the future of professional racing in Harapan.  Now this a huge deal for many reasons.  One is that by law in Harapan, no citizen or resident can own any technology or progressive form of transportation unless it is specifically designed and used for racing or race training.  Not only this, every piece of technology in Harapan is on the King's Grid.  Not one battery is changed in Harapan without being tracked in the Makarian Mainframe.  In common terms, if you aren't a racer, you're gonna need a horse, a tiger or an elephant, because you sure won't have anything with a motor in it.

All the best,
NP

Help Create The Stone

I am having some trouble deciding on which style to use for my graphic novel, The Legend of Harapan. If you have any thoughts or an opinion on the two styles above, please feel free to share. Your opinion is extremely valuable to me, since the story is for you, and I want you to be happy.

Much respect,
NP
